Can you see hail damage on a roof from the ground?
Usually not. Hail damage to shingles is often too small to see from the ground. What you can see are the signs around your home: dents in gutters, downspouts, vents and air conditioner fins, granules washing out of the downspouts, and neighbors getting new roofs. If you notice any of these after a storm, schedule a roof inspection.
What hail does to a shingle
Asphalt shingles are covered in granules that protect them from the sun. Hail can knock those granules loose and bruise the shingle underneath.
This kind of damage usually does not leak right away. Over time, the exposed shingle breaks down in the sun, and the roof can start leaking months or even a year or two after the storm. That is why a roof can look fine from the street and still be damaged.
Signs you can see from the yard
Check the metal around your home. Dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents and air conditioner fins are signs that hail was large enough to damage your roof. Torn window screens and dents on cars or mailboxes are also signs.
After the next rain, look under your downspouts. A noticeable pile of granules can mean the storm damaged your shingles.
If several neighbors on your street are getting new roofs after a storm, it is a good idea to have yours checked too.
What can only be seen on the roof
Bruised and cracked shingles, lifted shingles and damage to the ridge usually need to be checked up close by someone on the roof. An inspector can also tell you how the age and condition of your roof affect the damage.
What to do if you see the signs
Schedule a roof inspection before you file a claim, so the damage is documented. All My Brothers Construction offers free roof inspections with a detailed report and photos. Do not wait too long, because insurance policies have deadlines for filing a claim.
